January 8: Top Ten Bookish Goals For 2013

TTT3W

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We’d love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

1. Switch off the TV a little bit and read more.- I usually tend to watch TV a lot, especially since I own some TV shows on DVD/Bluray and that keeps me away from my books. I enjoy both activities, but I also realise I should read a little bit more.

2. Reduce my TBR pile.- I think we all want to do this!

3. Read more of those books one has to read.- I’m refering to landmarks in literature, most of them from the 19th century onwards.

4. Read some non-fiction.- I’m the biggest non-fiction fan, but I do think I should explore the genre in detail before. All I ever read regarding non-fiction was Eat, Pray, Love and Wild and they were both horrible readings I would not even recommend to my worst enemy. Of course, academic readings are always present in my life and count as non-fiction.

5. Continue reading the Jenny Cooper and Kay Scarpetta series I started in 2012.

6. Use my Sony e-reader more.- I bought it and I really like it but somehow I tend to read physical books rather than e-books. That’s the reason I’d like to give them a chance.

7. Explore new bookish blogs and subscribe to them.

8. Keep a record of the quotes that impress me or which I find meaningful so that I can share them here.

9. Buy a bookcase for my Sony e-reader to carry it around and meet purpose 6.

10. I was given a blank cookbook yesterday and I plan to fill it with great recipes.

Keeping a record of quotes that impress or are meaningful is a great idea. I stopped watching tv years ago. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how many books you can read in a week or a month without tv eating up your time. Happy reading in 2013. My post is up.

Happy reading, Sandra! Actually, I’m not against tv or movies, I love a good movie and I think there is great stuff out there, so I’ll only try to come to terms with the time I spend watching it. Oh God, I’d never quit watching tv/movies!

I am so with you on most of these! My sister got me a beautiful leather-bound notebook a year or so ago, and I use it to record quotes that I really like. I tend to underline while reading or make notes on my phone as to the page numbers of good quotes, and then I try to remember to record them all when I’m done reading the book. Now that I think about it, though, I’ve fallen behind! I definitely think dedicating a notebook — or a computer file — to quotes is a great way to keep them organized!

I don’t like highlighting or writing notes, but I do use little stickers to mark the quotes I like while reading so I can collect them later on (otherwise it would be very uncomfortable to be reading and stop every two pages to jot down a quote).

I keep track of the books I read on a designer notebook my best friends bought me years ago, but I don’t have one for quotes… yet :D

You’ve inspired me to push myself away from the television. Not all the time, though. I have to have my Downton Abby fix.

    • Elena January 8, 2013 at 19:12 #

We’ve already seen it in Europe. Can’t wait til you see the whole of it and we comment it :D

I can relate to a number of your goals, a few of yours were goals of my own but didn’t quite make it on my TTT because I wanted to keep it at 10. Using my Kindle more and stepping away from the TV are just two of the ones that didn’t make it on my list.
Good luck with achieving your goals for 2013. :-)

Thanks, Jade! Same for you. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has problems with tv.

I still have to watch Downton Abbey, in fact one of my resolutions should be to watch a bit more so I can join in on the conversations about series everybody loves (and I don’t even know).
Good goald, Elena! Re non-fiction you should watch Birgit’s blog as she us running a non-fiction challenge this year. Re cooking, you should watch mine, :) .

Let me know when you watch season 3 of DA and we’ll discuss it (so many things to discuss!).

I love reading non-fiction as long as it fits into “research” but any other things, I just don’t like them at all, I find them boring.

I always watch your blog regarding cooking! And your pics, although they are too tempting :)

  6. Joana January 9, 2013 at 01:49 #

All my tv shows keep me away from reading too. There’s just so many good ones out there!

    • Elena January 9, 2013 at 10:28 #

I 100% agree. I’m not one who despise tv/movies. I do prefer books, but there are some productions out there that can change your life the way books do.

Here’s my TTT: http://www.best-of-ya.blogspot.com by the way.

#8 is a great goal; I started jotting down my favourite quotes (funny, thought-provoking, poignant, etc) from the books I read a few years ago into this notebook (got the idea from another book blogger who was doing this) and yeah, it’s just a great way to have those quotes down somewhere. Looking forward to reading some of these quotes in the coming year! :)

Best of luck with your goals this year Elena, it’ll be an awesome 2013! :)

    • Elena January 9, 2013 at 10:29 #

Thanks, Li! Same to you. Every time I read one of your reviews, I see lots of quotes and I almost never have them (the exception was Howards End).

  9. Krystianna January 12, 2013 at 21:17 #

I’m hoping to reduce my TBR pile as well. There are just way too many books that I need to read.

      Good luck then ;)

Someone mentioned a 2013 reading challenge on facebook or goodreads? I just hope blogs count!

    • Elena January 14, 2013 at 22:57 #

      It should definitely count!
