I am a fan of detective fiction and crime novels and Collins is like the father of that genre. I think The Woman in White has everything a good crime/mystery/detective novel must have, plus, Collins created one of the most brave and intelligent women in literature that slightly reminds of the great Irene Adler. The plot is also a masterpiece in both form and narrative and although it can be a little bit slow sometimes, it eventually pays off. Last, but not least, Count Fosco is said to be the antecedent of nowadays maphias in ficiton (Tony Soprano, for example) and it’s true. He is everything and nothign at the same time.

Poe is widely regarded as the originator of detective fiction with the publicaton of “The Purloined Letter” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” I agree with you, though, about Wilkie Collins. I like “The Moonstone,” which, by the way, was made into a miniseries by the BBC on Masterpiece Theatre long ago.

Thanks for visitng, John! I have recently added “The Moonstone” to my TBR list and I’m talking my best friend into reading “The Woman in White” but she seems not to like it… yet.

I loved The Woman in White – great choice. I don’t know many people who’ve read Wilkie Collins, apart from my father, so it was fun for me to see, after I started reading book blogs, how many people read him.

I think it’s a great book and I agree Collins is not that well known. In fact, I’m studying English literature and he hasn’t been part of any course… sad but true.
